Why was FusBoxe created?
Over decades of training Michael Sullivan searched for a system that possessed true Martial Arts balance. Some systems were combative and effective, yet lacked in spirit. Other systems were spiritual, yet owned no realistic relevance in self-defense or the sport and mixed martial art environments.

Michael Sullivan started his training in the European Martial Arts in 1974. With the ever-growing desire to learn more, Michael Sullivan began studying Tae-Kwon-Do in 1984 for Martial Art Combat and self-defense purposes. Michael noticed right away the difference it made in his abilities. Michael Sullivan recalls also noticing MAJOR holes in the way T.K.D. was designed. The one thing that limited T.K.D. turned out to be the same thing that limits most styles. It was designed to work within a set of rules suited to its strengths, allowing practitioners the luxury of ignoring its weaknesses.

From the beginning, Michael Sullivan wanted to experience what he perceived the Martial Arts to be: a complete way of life, health & fitness, Self Defense and offense. He searched for a system composed of the principles of Zen along side of the development of extraordinary physical capabilities. Unfortunately he did not find a system of training or thought that encompassed that complete balance.

Through Michael Sullivan's three-decade journey in the Martial Arts he created a modern, balanced system mixed with the heritage of the ancient ways. This is the system of FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts. Michael has laid the foundations of FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts in Denver Colorado, the place that has best supported his journey in the Martial Arts. Michael Sullivan now trains FusBoxers, Mixed Martial artists, Grapplers, FusKimono and Thai Boxers in Broomfield, Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, and Golden, Colorado, Los Angeles California and even as far away as Cyprus Europe.

What is a FusBoxe Workout like?
FusBoxing courses consist of considerable cardio and aerobic activity. Stretching is an important part of our routine along with the development of deep and full joint movement. A FusBoxe workout will be a mix of Kick Boxing - Boxing - Thai Boxing - Muay Thai Sport Boxing - Muay Thai Traditional Kick Boxing - Karate.

FusBoxe training can be seperated into striking and grappling. The first class is normally striking, and then whomever is interested in continuing into the second hour is welcome to stay. The second half of FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts training is a combination of Punching - Kicking - Elbow and Knee Striking drills - Grappling reversal drills - Grappling positoning drills - Ju-jitsu escape drills - Mixed Martial Arts, Grappling, Ju-jitsu, Judo, Sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission drills. All of these FusBoxe Martial Art/Self-Defense drills are combined for an exciting and challenging workout for anybody of any skill level or physical condition.

FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts training sessions are divided into 4 segments:
1. Striking (plan on sweating) 2. Ground (plan on sweating) 3. Throws (plan on studying) 4. Educational: weak body points, pressure points. (Plan on recovering) Will I get hit?

Nobody gets hit unless they elect to spar. Sparing is not mandatory but is allowed when each student is ready. FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts offers Mauy Thai KickBoxing sparring, Mixed Martial Art sparring, FusKimono Grappling useing Brazil cut Gi, Japan Judo cut Gi, Russian Kurtka Gi or jacket sparring. FusBoxe also offers no-Gi Grappling or Submission Wrestling. Sparring pace is set by each student, the fear of being hit is not a reality if you don't wish to contact spar. Keep in mind, no one can become a good fighter or Martial Artist without the reality of sparring, if someone says you can, they are either science-fiction based Martial Artists or lying. FusBoxe is in the business of turning out experts in the Martial Arts; either for the fight, Self-Defense, or Defense of your family.

Muay Thai KickBoxing - Nobody kicks harder than the Thai Boxer. This proven and simple fact is the reason Muay Thai kickboxing was choosen to be the official striking system in FusBoxe America and FusBoxe Europe.

Pankrase - Throughout history, one Martial Art stands out more than any other when it comes to proven Martial Art Grappling skill and reality combat. That Martial Art system is Pankrase. Pankrase was the hand to hand fighting system used by the mighty Greek Spartans and later the Roman Empire, by both the military and the Roman Gladiators. Pankrase is what modern Free Style Wrestling would be without rules and without the encouragement of fist, shin, elbow and knee striking. For this reason FusBoxe has chooosen Pankrase to be the first official Grappling system.

Sambo - The once strong war machine, the USSR, sought to create a perfect Self-Defense (Sambo) system for use in the most realistic of combat applications: war. The Russian military trained their troops to fight a war after the big bombs destroyed American war machines. In this effort of post-nuclear warfare, the Russians wanted their troops to be able to out fight American troops when the fight went hand to hand. All Russian troops were then ordered to earn their Black Belt in Sambo. Had a war took place and played out as the Russians predicted, American troops would have surely found themselves in a losing situation. At the time, American Hand to Hand was an after thought if even that. The current American fighting system is vastly improving thanks to the Gracie Ju-jitsu family from Brazil and contests such as the U.F.C. Bushido, Pride, Ring of Fire, Kickdown Classic and Rage in the Cage showing America what they did not know about Hand to Hand combat.

For all the reasons mentioned above FusBoxe has choosen Sambo to be the second official Grappling system.

Boxing - Most people look at Boxing through the eyes of Queensburry rules Boxing. Queensburry rules Boxing is the most popular form of Boxing, but not the only form. Boxing began with the Greeks as a test of skill and warriorism. The Punches of Boxing with bare hands are very different than the punches of wrapped and protected hands. Boxing has proven to be the most effective punching Martial Art in the world, and for this fact FusBoxe has chosen ancient and modern boxing as the official punching styles. FusBoxe teaches effective punching with bare hands and competition punching with gloved hands.

Mixed Martial Arts - Mixed Martial Arts, in the context that FusBoxe uses it, is not meant to include bundles of civilian Martial Arts like Crane Kung fu - Shaolin Kung fu - Karate. Mixing Martial Arts such as these classical civilian styles would most likely create a system that is difficult to melt together, or it would be nearly indistinguishable from one of the key Martial Arts it was created from.

FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts is intended to define the melting of various effective submission Grappling techniques from systems like Wrestling-used for its control of self and opponent- and Pankrase-for use of submissions largely unknown to the Grappling mainstream. FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts uses Kenpo Karate in Defending rear, weapon and group attacks, and first response fighting in Self-Defense scenarios. FusBoxe teaches Ju Jitsu for its joint manipulation and Grappling submissions, and Greco Roman Wrestling for its upper- body throws. FusBoxe MMA uses Thai Boxing for its powerful knee and elbow strikes and legendary Round Kicks, as well as Tae Kwon Do for its flexibility and speed, and Boxing for its great hand-speed, effectiveness, and power.

These are some examples of melt-able Martial Arts that make a great Mixed Martial Art. FusBoxe Mixed Martial Arts are not without soul. FusBoxe MMA promotes meditation and inner balance as a supplement to one of the most effective and First Organized Mixed Martial Art systems in the world. Mixed Martial Arts are the future of the Martial Arts world. Many traditional Martial Artists find this hard to stomach. Keep this in mind when looking at Martial Art systems. It does not make sense that anybody would ever in the history of the world design a system of martial combat that absolutely neglects a given and common area of human combat. An example of this is ground work. Some styles say they will never need grappling and ground-fighting even though actual research evidence shows that 90% or more of conflicts do go to the ground. With this still in mind, many traditional instructors ignore the ground fight so they can promote emotional loyalty to a particular Martial Art without benefiting the Martial Artist as a whole, well-rounded fighter.

Where can FusBoxe be found?

FusBoxe has made its way from the place it was created in Colorado to L.A. and most recently to the historically-rich island of Cyprus within the European Union. In a way, FusBoxe has made its way home to the birthplace of its ancestors of Martial Arts. Welcome home FusBoxe!
